The Golden Teacher is without a doubt one of the most iconic strains of Psilocybe cubensis. Its first documented appearance dates back to the late 1980s, when it began to circulate widely among collectors and mycology labs.
The name, which literally means “Golden Teacher”, was inspired both by the golden hue of its caps and by the reputation it gained: a strain that became a “teacher” through its symbolism and cultural presence.
While many strains are named after places of collection, the Golden Teacher established itself as a universal lineage. It became the most popular Psilocybe cubensis strain in the Western world, especially during the resurgence of interest in mushrooms throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Authors and promoters such as Terence McKenna helped cement its reputation, frequently citing cubensis mushrooms as catalysts for cultural and spiritual reflection.
Psilocybin mushrooms, known as teonanácatl (“Flesh of the Gods”), were used for centuries by Mazatec, Maya, and Aztec peoples in sacred rituals of healing and communion with the divine. This knowledge was brought to light in the West in 1957, when ethnomycologist R. Gordon Wasson published in Life magazine his famous account of a ceremony conducted by María Sabina, the Mazatec healer.
This historical event paved the way for strains like the Golden Teacher to gain recognition in mycological collections and in popular imagination decades later.
Today, psilocybin — the main alkaloid found in Psilocybe cubensis — is among the most studied psychedelic compounds in modern science. Institutions such as Johns Hopkins University and Imperial College London are investigating its potential in areas such as:
Treatment-resistant depression
Anxiety and PTSD
Addiction and substance dependence
Scientific exploration of consciousness
The Golden Teacher, as one of the most widely distributed strains, has become a symbol of the psychedelic renaissance, often cited in articles, books, and conferences about psilocybin.

When you read “Magic Mushroom,” understand that “Magic” is synonymous with “Psychedelic” or “Hallucinogenic.” In other words, these are species of mushrooms that contain psychoactive compounds, which act directly on the human nervous system and consciousness.
In Brazil, the sale of fresh or dried mushrooms is considered legal, since the legislation (ANVISA Ordinance 344/98) does not include the fungus Psilocybe cubensis in its list of prohibited substances.
